Single garage kits

The four smaller plans, from 6 × 3.6 m to 7.5 × 4 m, suit a single car, a boat or a workshop. A typical NZ single garage is about 3 m to 3.6 m wide and 6 m long inside, so choose the 7 × 4 m or 7.5 × 4 m plan if you want room to walk around a ute. The 6.2 × 5.2 m plan is a step up, with room for a car and a workbench and storage along one side.

Double garage kits

A common NZ double garage is about 6 × 6 m inside, and the practical minimum for two cars is around 5.5 × 5.5 m. Our plans that suit two cars start at 6 × 6 m, then 6.6 × 6 m, 7.2 × 6 m and 7.2 × 6.6 m, up to 7.2 × 7.2 m and 8.4 × 6 m.

Plan sizes are external, so the inside is a little smaller, and the 6 × 6 m plan sits close to that minimum. If you want space for car doors, a workbench and storage, go for a larger plan. Our garage sizes guide covers how much room cars need and how the door affects the width.

Roofs and doors

Roofs are mono pitch at 4° to 8° or gable at 5° to 15°, and two of the smaller plans come with either. Door openings can be resized or moved at the drafting stage to suit the garage door your builder is supplying.

To try a size of your own, open the 3D Frame Designer and send your design to us.

Consent notes

Four plans in this range are 30m² or under. A detached, single-storey building of up to 30m² can be built without a building consent if it meets one of the Schedule 1 exemption routes and every condition of that route. Buildings between 10m² and 30m² must sit at least 1m from boundaries and from any house. Our guide to the 30m² building consent exemption explains the routes and the conditions that catch people out.

Check your district plan for site coverage, height and setback rules as well. Garages over 30m² generally need a building consent. We can supply engineering reports to support the application, for sign-off by a third-party engineer, and recommend cost-effective engineers.

SmartFraming supplies the steel frame: wall and roof framing, made up or flat-packed, with pre-punched service holes, erection screws and detailed assembly plans. Your builder supplies and installs the slab, cladding, roofing, garage door and any linings.

A common NZ double garage is about 6 × 6 m inside, and the practical minimum for two cars is around 5.5 × 5.5 m. Our plans that suit two cars run from 6 × 6 m up to 7.2 × 7.2 m and 8.4 × 6 m. Plan sizes are external, so the inside is a little smaller.

It depends on the size and your site. A detached, single-storey building of up to 30m² can be built without a building consent if it meets one of the Schedule 1 exemption routes and every condition of that route. Four of our plans are 30m² or under. Larger garages generally need a building consent, and so do garages attached to a house. Check with your council before you order.

We quote each job rather than publish a price list, because the cost of the frame depends on the size, the roof, whether it's made up or flat-packed, and how far it's going. Quotes are free. The frame is one part of the total build, so ask your builder to price the slab, cladding, roofing, garage door and labour as well.

Often, for a small garage. The frames arrive labelled with detailed assembly plans. Who can do the work depends on the size and the consent route, though, as some routes for buildings up to 30m² need a Licensed Building Practitioner or an engineer's review. Check before you start. We can also recommend installers.

Yes. Door openings can be resized or moved at the drafting stage to suit the door your builder is supplying. We can also frame a garage to your own plans, or you can set your own size in our 3D Frame Designer and send it to us.

Most quotes are sent within one business day. Once the drawings are signed off, frames are typically delivered in 10 to 15 working days, depending on workload. We deliver across New Zealand, and delivery is quoted separately based on your location.
